Sketching the challenges of the future resilient city

The sketchcity studyweek 2017 in Rotterdam is a joint project at the Rotterdam University between the two Swiss Universities of applied Sciences Chur and Berne, and the Rotterdam University, the Netherlands. For Multimedia Producers it is most important to have great and interesting content, important topics and material to communicate. The students from the Rotterdam University are the experts for resiliency.

Only with critical questions, one can narrow down a topic and find new ideas or conclusions for further actions.

Sketching the challenges of the future resilient city

After having understood the topic to be conveyed, the pictures have to be found so the story can be told with images and words. To be involved in a topic generates the most interesting stories, so we decided to dive in the city.

Swiss Students from the Universites of applied Sciences Chur and Berne sketch ideas for the needs of the future liveable city.

Only with critical questions, one can narrow down a topic and find new ideas or conclusions for further actions. After having understood the topic to be conveyed, the pictures have to be found so the story can be told with images and words. To be involved in a topic generates the most interesting stories, so we decided to dive in the city. In this sketchcity studyweek, all students will apply methods and know how to learn:

How to dive in a questioning and narrow down a topic

How to sketch the city as it is and generate

New ideas out of these experiences

How to sketch ideas

How to iterate the ideas and use the method of design thinking and sketching as well as critical thinking to sharpen the ideas and sketches.

How to wrap the idea into a story

How to tell the story with ideasketches

The students from the Rotterdam University are the experts for resiliency

They know the challenges, the things to be done and how they have to be done to have in future a more liveable city. Since sketching is a lean design tool for everybody students from both universities, Rotterdam and Switzerland sketch and generate together new ideas.

For scientists, researchers and citizens it is most important that we all convey and understand the important topic of resilience and sustainability so that everybody knows the challenges we face. So we joined two disciplines to achieve best results.

Sustainability Cooperation from the well to the delta of the River Rhine

The Rotterdam University is an innovative University with a specific focus on sustainability and urban planning as well as the citizen design approach. The University of Applied Sciences HTW Chur with its Bachelor in Multimedia Production is the leading Degree in Media Communication in Switzerland.

A cooperation in the field of input and background in urban design and sketching as ways to develop and find, as well as communicate new ideas is key. The cooperation brings the two universities together.

Here is, what the Rotterdam University does for Resilience

What is Resilience?

Toughness, elasticity, and the ability to recover quickly from difficulties; that is the meaning of resilience in a nutshell. Developments such as climate change, digitalization, the new economy, and globalisation bring new opportunities and risks. Cities that are able to anticipate and respond to these dynamics are best placed to tap into growth opportunities.
